The team at Khalifa University innovated a low-cost desalination solution with a distiller and a gravity solar heater for the production of purified water through evaporation and condensation of salt water. The gravity solar heater heats water using passive heat exchange and circulates heated water to the distiller using natural convection without a mechanical pump. The pilot system is composed of inexpensive and locally affordable materials. It also results in 100% removal of E-coli, total coliform removal, and 99% removal of metals, inorganics, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and salinity, and can produce between 1.9 L/m2/day to a maximum of 4 L/m2/day of distilled water.
