The UAE has established a global role in international efforts to combat humanitarian challenges, as well as having a strong presence in the areas of emergency and long-term humanitarian aid in all parts of the world. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minster of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, issued a law establishing Suqia, the UAE Water Aid Foundation as non-profit organisation. Today, the UAE Water Aid Foundation is an entity under the umbrella of the "Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives Foundation", and is primarily concerned with research and development as regards to water shortage solutions

Since its establishment, the UAE Water Aid Foundation has become a distinguished organisation that provides humanitarian aid to the needy and distressed around the world. It contributes to sustainable solutions to water scarcity around the world. This is achieved by providing new and innovative technological solutions, such as solar powered water desalination and filtration, for communities that suffer from scarcity and contamination of drinking water. The Foundation also supervises “The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award”, an annual USD 1 million-dollar international award for research and development of new technologies and mechanisms to produce water using solar power
